Eighty years after his liberation from Buchenwald, Elie Wiesel: Soul on Fire seeks to understand the man behind Wiesel's searing memoir Night. Filmmaker Oren Rudavsky explores the inner life of Holocaust survivor, writer, teacher, public figure and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel (1928-2016). A private man yet one of the most public voices of Holocaust remembrance, Wiesel is presented here with an intimacy known only to his closest friends and family. Elie Wiesel: Soul on Fire reveals Wiesel’s passions, his conflicts, and his legacy. With unique access to personal archives and interviews, the film explores its subject with nuance and tenderness, creating a crucial testament to an extraordinary man who helped shape our memory of the darkest chapter of the 20th century.
Now in its 23rd year, the Marcus Lecture commemorates Fred Marcus, a dedicated Jewish educator and Holocaust survivor who shared his experiences with countless audiences. Since 2022, the Lecture also honors Audrey Friedman Marcus, who co-founded the Marcus Lecture in her late husband’s memory, and without whose tireless advocacy on behalf of Holocaust education this longstanding community program would not be possible.
Presented by the Holocaust Awareness Institute at the University of Denver’s Center for Judaic Studies, in partnership with the Mizel Arts and Culture Center, the annual Marcus Lecture highlights new scholarship and perspectives on the Holocaust and illuminates its continuing significance today.
